The Life of an Indigenous Legend – STEPHEN CAMPBELL

Stephen Joseph Campbell was born in Moruca, Region 1 on December 26, 1897. He was elected to the Legislative Council of British Guiana on September 10, 1957. His achievements are celebrated especially annually in September during Amerindian Heritage month with September 10th dubbed Heritage Day in his honour.

Campbell pushed for Indigenous land rights to be guaranteed in the Independence Constitution and also spearheaded bringing to the fore, the vital and rightful place of Indigenous peoples in the mainstream Guyanese life and development.
