Dengue and ‘lepto’ cases in East Berbice

The Regional Health Department in East Berbice Corentyne is monitoring 67 cases of dengue and 5 cases of leptospirosis. This is according to Regional Chairman David Armogan who disclosed that the majority of the cases are from the Black Bush Polder area where floodwaters have devastated several communities. Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection while leptospirosis is caused by animals through their waste.

During a media briefing yesterday, Armogan disclosed that those persons infected are being treated. He noted that no deaths have been recorded as a result of the two health illnesses.

The Regional Chairman also explained that the health department has already put systems in place to treat the infected persons and to do contact tracing to reduce the number of cases across the region. Packages containing the relevant medications were also being provided to households where these cases were prevalent. Additionally, fogging and spraying of the communities is ongoing.
