CHINESE ARRIVAL DAY

Today marks 169 years since the Chinese arrived in Guyana.

Due to Covid-19 pandemic, no event was held to commemorate this day.

However, staff at the Chinese Embassy in Guyana and the Chinese Association of Guyana posted greetings on their social media pages.

Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan in her message, encouraged all Chinese living here to continue to practice peace and goodwill.

From 1853-1879, a total of 13,541 Chinese were brought to Guyana as indentured servants and scattered across the three counties.

On completion of their indentureship, many of them remained.

Several of them became business leaders and engaged in commercial pursuits.
