The Guyana Hockey Board has unveiled its shortlisted squads for the upcoming PAHF Junior Challenge in Barbados, with the boys and girls Under-21 teams preparing for the competition.
The event, which will take place in Bridgetown from March 9 to 16, 2025, is crucial for the development of hockey in Guyana, providing young players with vital experience on the international stage.
The PAHF Junior Challenge serves as a qualifier for the second Junior Pan American Games, which will be held from August 9 to 22 in Asuncion, Paraguay.
According to Phillip Fernandes, Head of the Guyana Hockey Board, the competition is essential for the next generation of hockey players in the country.
Fernandes emphasized that earning a spot at the Junior Pan American Games would be a significant milestone for Guyana in its pursuit of regional success.
The boys’ team will face off against teams from Barbados, Brazil, Trinidad & Tobago, Guatemala, and Venezuela, while the girls will compete against Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
Fernandes highlighted the importance of the experience gained at this competition in preparing the teams for their 2025 campaigns.
Following trials, 27 boys and 23 girls have been shortlisted to train for the final squad selections, which will take place next month.
The boys’ team will benefit from the experience of eight players who were part of the junior national team that placed fifth at the 2023 Junior Pan Am Championships.
The girls’ team will be strengthened by four overseas-based players with international experience: Sarah Kalutky, Madison and Georgiana Fernandes, and Charlia Webb. Locally-based players Kirsten Gomes and Clayza Bobb will also play key roles.
With the goal of securing a place at the Junior Pan American Games, the upcoming PAHF Junior Challenge presents a critical opportunity for Guyana’s hockey players to showcase their talents and gain valuable international experience.
