The Speaker’s Regional Youth Debating Competition saw a riveting exchange of arguments as the Joshua Generation Youth Ministry emerged victorious over the St. Joseph’s High Law Society Youth Group.
The moot of the debate centered on “Sports as a cohesive element is underutilized.”
The St. Joseph’s High Law Society Youth Group, as the proposing side, argued that prior to 2020, sports in Guyana lacked official recognition, being governed by a department rather than a Ministry of the Government.
They emphasized the potential of sports in fostering team spirit, cooperation, and boosting self-esteem.
In response, the opposing Joshua Generation Youth Ministry Youth Group countered by citing a UNDP article highlighting the role of sports in promoting social cohesion and reducing crime rates at a community level, both locally and globally.
After a rigorous debate, the combined scores from the judges tipped in favor of the Joshua Generation Youth Ministry Youth Group, with a total of 193 points, narrowly surpassing the St. Joseph High Law Society Youth Group’s 190 points.
The competition showcased the eloquence and critical thinking skills of the youth participants, underscoring the importance of engaging young minds in constructive discourse.
