Youth Basketball Guyana Expands Reach with Primary School Tournament in 2024

Youth Basketball Guyana to introduce a primary school basketball tournament

In a bid to foster basketball talent from a young age, Youth Basketball Guyana (YBG) has announced plans to launch a primary school basketball tournament as part of its 2024 calendar of events.

Under the direction of YBG director Chris Bowman, the program will kick off with the Challenge Series and shooting competition, designed to emphasize fundamental skills such as shooting, passing, dribbling, and core movement.

This introductory event aims to lay the groundwork for young athletes and showcase the basic elements of the game.

The Regional Conference, scheduled to commence on March 15 and run through to the playoffs in June, will serve as a platform for schools to qualify for the National School Basketball Championship.

Notably, there will be divisions for girls aged 18 and under, as well as boys under 14, under 16, and 18 and under.

In a groundbreaking move, YBG will introduce the Primary School Basketball Program from May 12 to June 16 at the National Gymnasium.

This initiative aims to familiarize younger students with structured gameplay and rules, providing them with an early opportunity to engage with the sport in a competitive setting.

Additionally, May and June will see the Tertiary Basketball League, catering to university and technical institute players transitioning from high school.

YBG’s flagship event, the National Schools Basketball Festival, is slated for its 17th edition from June 28 to July 7.

The year will conclude with the Titan Bowl schools knock-out tournament and tertiary knock-out tournament from December 12 to 15, marking the end of an eventful calendar aimed at nurturing basketball talent across all levels in Guyana.
