Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Priya Manickchand, is encouraging citizens with relatives buried at the Le Repentir Cemetery in Georgetown to take responsibility for maintaining their tombs, as government continues extensive cleaning and rehabilitation works at the facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a recent visit to the cemetery, Manickchand highlighted the progress made in clearing overgrown vegetation, noting that sections previously obscured by thick bushes are now visible and accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs you can see, we can see all the way out to Cemetery Road. We’re still cleaning, debushing, de-weeding, trying to grub to make sure people could access their tombs and that we maintain this and keep it clean,\u201d the Minister stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ongoing works form part of efforts to restore the cemetery to a more manageable condition, allowing families to visit the graves of their loved ones without the difficulties previously posed by overgrown vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Manickchand acknowledged that sustaining the improvements would require consistent maintenance, particularly given the rapid growth of certain types of vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re going to try very hard to maintain this and keep it in a place where it continues to look like this. That’s not easy because there are particular weeds that grow up very quickly, but we’re going to try,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Minister also stressed the importance of public participation in preserving the cemetery’s improved condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe invite people to come, members of the public who have relatives buried in here, take care of your tombs, clean them up, scrub them down, look after them,\u201d Manickchand urged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She emphasised that with access to gravesites now improved, families have an opportunity to contribute directly to the cemetery’s upkeep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
