But the use of domestic weighing scales in markets remains a challenge for the Guyana National Bureau of Standards.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-52.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-52.png 768w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-52-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-52-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">GNBS working on new law to address market scales\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bureau says the ordinary blue dial scales used in some markets are not designed for commercial trade, raising concerns about the accuracy of measurements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIt is a challenge for us at this point in time because it is a domestic skill, and it&#8217;s not supposed to be used for commercial trade. The Bureau, we are working when we go out in the markets, and so we would advise the stakeholders, the type to buy. They are these electronic ones that are being sold now that they could use those<\/strong>,\u201d Shailendra Ra\u00ed, Head of Legal Metrology, shared. <br>To address the issue, the Bureau is developing a new Metrology Bill and regulations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rai says the existing law dates back to 1981 and does not adequately address several of the issues surrounding measuring instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe are currently working on developing legislation and regulation to address this issue. So very shortly, you&#8217;re going&nbsp;to hear we will have some consultations on the new metrology bill that we&#8217;re currently working on.
