{"id":32364,"date":"2026-10-08T20:35:03","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T00:35:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=32364"},"modified":"2026-10-08T20:35:03","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T00:35:03","slug":"fire-leaves-family-of-five-homeless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/fire-leaves-family-of-five-homeless\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire\u00a0leaves family of five homeless\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;&nbsp;<strong>In Plum Park, Sophia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-by Shamiah Grant <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fire this morning destroyed&nbsp;a house in&nbsp;Plum&nbsp;Park,&nbsp;Sophia, leaving&nbsp;a family of five homeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fire was one in three reported this morning as Guyana observes&nbsp;Fire Prevention Month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"461\" src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-7-1024x461.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-7-1024x461.png 1024w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-7-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-7-768x346.png 768w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-7.png 1422w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taxi driver Mark Cordis and his partner, Yolanda Gilgeous, who works at&nbsp;the Campbellville Post Office, along with their three children, are now homeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the lost items were essential personal valuables, including a land certificate and the children\u2019s school supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overwhelmed with emotion,&nbsp;the&nbsp;mother&nbsp;spoke with the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was sitting on the laden and the neighbor said that fire on this one side and by time I run inside I see the whole one side start burning I took of one of the bottles from the stove and I push out the bottles them and by time I go to go back in the smoke done coming into my face,\u201d Gilgeous said. <br>Guyana Fire Service Operations Officer,\u00a0Commander Orin Bancroft confirmed that the structure was fully engulfed in flames upon their arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>After we received at the fire at block E Sophia Plum Park, four vehicles were disseminated to dispatch to this given location.<\/strong> <strong>The building was already engulfed in flame immediately three \u2026. was deployed to put out the blaze<\/strong>,\u201d he explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fire at Sophia was one of three attended to this morning by the Guyana Fire Service, and too as it observed Fire Prevention Month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A&nbsp;grass fire broke out near the burial ground in&nbsp;Plaisance,&nbsp;and&nbsp;the Campbellville Secondary School canteen&nbsp;suffered a fire which was&nbsp;successfully extinguished.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-post-featured-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1422\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-7.png\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"object-fit:cover;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-7.png 1422w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-7-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-7-1024x461.png 1024w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/image-7-768x346.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1422px) 100vw, 1422px\" \/><\/figure>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8211;&nbsp;In Plum Park, Sophia -by Shamiah Grant A fire this morning destroyed&nbsp;a house in&nbsp;Plum&nbsp;Park,&nbsp;Sophia, leaving&nbsp;a family of five homeless.
