{"id":32141,"date":"2026-09-29T18:59:24","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T22:59:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=32141"},"modified":"2026-09-29T18:59:24","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T22:59:24","slug":"four-witnesses-left-as-mohamed-extradition-case-nears-one-year-mark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/four-witnesses-left-as-mohamed-extradition-case-nears-one-year-mark\/","title":{"rendered":"Four witnesses left as Mohamed\u00a0extradition case nears one-year mark"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-by Kimberly Giddings <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prosecution\u2019s witness list in the Mohamed extradition case is narrowing, with no more than four witnesses left to testify as the proceedings approach the one-year mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The case will return to the Georgetown Magistrates\u2019 Court on October 21 and 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lead prosecutor, King\u2019s Counsel Terence Williams, confirmed Tuesday that four witnesses have been served, but said the prosecution could ultimately call fewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His comments came as another lengthy phase of the proceedings wrapped up, with defence attorney Siand Dhurjon concluding more than 20 hours of cross-examination of Head of Special Branch, Senior Superintendent Prem Narine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Williams acknowledged the pace of the case, saying the prosecution wants to see the court\u2019s time used efficiently, while stressing that both sides must be allowed to properly present their cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>One would always want to see the court resources being used efficiently but we are happy that justice is being done and sometimes justice takes some time and as we say where the\u00a0questions are irrelevant repetitive, we make the objections and the court rules, that is how the justice system works<\/strong>,\u201d he said. <br>With October marking one year since the extradition proceedings began, Williams said the prosecution is looking to move through its remaining witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday\u2019s hearing also brought\u00a0Dhurjon\u2019s\u00a0marathon questioning of Narine to an end.\u00a0Several questions triggered prosecution objections, with Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman ruling some irrelevant.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The defence returned to Narine\u2019s destroyed pocketbook, Azruddin Mohamed\u2019s arrest and the police operation along Smyth Street.\u00a0Dhurjon also suggested Mohamed was a threat to the PPP\/C \u2014 a suggestion Narine rejected, maintaining that Mohamed posed a threat to the people of Guyana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a0Outside the central extradition evidence, the court addressed a social media post featuring Narine\u2019s 11-year-old son.
