{"id":31999,"date":"2026-09-21T17:43:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-21T21:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=31999"},"modified":"2026-09-21T17:43:20","modified_gmt":"2026-09-21T21:43:20","slug":"restorative-justice-programme-expanding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/restorative-justice-programme-expanding\/","title":{"rendered":"Restorative Justice Programme Expanding"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211;<strong>With the training of more practitioners<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guyana is expanding its restorative justice programme, with three new centres to be established in Regions Six, Eight and Nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move follows the training of a new cohort of restorative justice practitioners, as the system seeks to provide an alternative pathway for dealing with minor offences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the third cohort of restorative justice practitioners, the next two weeks will involve intensive training and practical exercises aimed at preparing them for work within Guyana\u2019s justice system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twenty-one participants are taking part in the training as the programme expands its pool of restorative justice practitioners<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I am pleased to inform that in keeping with the promise in Budget 2026 to expand placement of restorative centers to provide services to the magistrate courts, from this training, staff will be selected to strengthen centers that are short-staffed and to operationalise three additional restorative centers,&#8221; Director of Restorative Justice Centres, William Boston said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three additional centres are being planned for Madhia in Region Eight, Lethem in Region Nine and another location in Region Six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The approach is designed to deal with minor offences and help reduce pressure on the traditional court system.<br><br>&#8220;Guyana was looking at measures to more or less stem backlog of cases in the court system, overcrowding of prisons, and that survey revealed that a lot of cases that we actually detain persons for or that are causing the backlogs are more or less of minor offense type. As a result of that, with the surgence of restorative justice globally, it was proposed that restorative justice would provide an option to us,&#8221; he said. <br><br>Restorative justice focuses not only on resolving individual cases, but also on addressing conflicts and supporting longer-term harmony within communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8211;With the training of more practitioners Guyana is expanding its restorative justice programme, with three new centres to be established in Regions Six, Eight and Nine.
