{"id":31962,"date":"2026-09-17T18:16:44","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T22:16:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=31962"},"modified":"2026-09-17T18:16:44","modified_gmt":"2026-09-17T22:16:44","slug":"1-3b-zeelugt-market-project-gets-underway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/1-3b-zeelugt-market-project-gets-underway\/","title":{"rendered":"$1.3B Zeelugt Market Project gets underway"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-by NaAsia Bristol<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new 1.3-billion-dollar market is coming to Zeelugt, West Coast Demerara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand today turned the sod for the project, which will increase vending capacity in the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 54 vendors currently operate along the reserve and streets in the Zeelugt community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is expected to change with construction of the new market, which will accommodate more vendors in a more organized and secure environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;We&#8217;re going to build a market that is going to be able to cater for 90 vendors almost double what you currently have the market is going to be a dry market that means goods and vegetables and fruits and clothes and jewelry and craft but also a wet market for fish and meats you don&#8217;t have to leave here and go to hydroni anymore to be able to get your meats and fish and and other wet items poultry<\/strong>,&#8221; she said. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/814498908_1727983706000377_1249264639168661969_n-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31964\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/814498908_1727983706000377_1249264639168661969_n-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/814498908_1727983706000377_1249264639168661969_n-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/814498908_1727983706000377_1249264639168661969_n-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/814498908_1727983706000377_1249264639168661969_n-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/814498908_1727983706000377_1249264639168661969_n.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new facility will also feature parking, a taxi bay, administrative and training facilities, a children&#8217;s play area and modern washrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;So markets across the country are bigger than a place where people sell it&#8217;s a place of community it&#8217;s a place that encourages economic growth it&#8217;s a place that encourages for us creativity and entrepreneurship and it&#8217;s a place of community and that shouldn&#8217;t be underestimated<\/strong>,&#8221; the minister explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project is being constructed in four lots, with the contracts awarded through a competitive bidding process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction is expected to take 14 months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>-by NaAsia Bristol A new 1.3-billion-dollar market is coming to Zeelugt, West Coast Demerara.
