{"id":31835,"date":"2026-09-09T20:45:56","date_gmt":"2026-09-10T00:45:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=31835"},"modified":"2026-09-09T20:45:56","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T00:45:56","slug":"indigenous-craft-makers-eye-business-growth-through-gdb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/indigenous-craft-makers-eye-business-growth-through-gdb\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous\u00a0craft\u00a0makers\u00a0eye business\u00a0growth through GDB"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indigenous craft makers are welcoming the Guyana Development Bank, saying access to financing could help transform traditional skills into sustainable businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This&nbsp;was highlighted at the&nbsp;Amerindian Arts, Craft and Cuisine Exhibition&nbsp;at the Sophia Exhibition Centre, where Indigenous artisans and vendors from&nbsp;showcased their products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For craft makers, access to financing means greater opportunities to purchase materials, increase production and reach new markets, while keeping traditional skills alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of those artisans is&nbsp;Leonie Willis from&nbsp;Mabaruma,who operates a variety store while producing Amerindian handicrafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Willis says she is currently the only craft maker in her community and believes financing could help her expand her business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>I even learned about the loan, the three-million-dollar loan that we can get to help boost our business.<\/strong> <strong>I&#8217;m grateful to the government and to the president for that great initiative, to give us the chance to move on and excel more<\/strong>,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Willis produces traditional\u00a0tibisiri crafts,\u00a0including fruit bowls and hammocks, using material from the tibisiri palm through a process of cutting, drying, boiling and weaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Willis\u00a0says support from the Guyana Development Bank would\u00a0not only\u00a0help\u00a0preserve Indigenous craftsmanship, but\u00a0also enable artisans\u00a0to build viable businesses\u00a0andpass those traditions on to the next generation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Indigenous craft makers are welcoming the Guyana Development Bank, saying access to financing could help transform traditional skills into sustainable businesses.
