President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali on Saturday announced plans to install two wells to support farming in Kuru Kuru, along with a six-megawatt power installation at Moblissa aimed at improving electricity supply to communities along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcements came during the President\u2019s engagement with residents of Kuru Kuru, where residents raised a series of concerns, including those regarding agriculture, electricity and community facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two wells are expected to provide additional support for the farming area as efforts are made to strengthen agricultural production in the community. The President also indicated that the government will work with farmers to improve the productivity of the available agricultural lands and promote more modern farming practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He highlighted the potential for farmers to utilise shade houses for the production of crops such as peppers, celery and shallots, while also developing the remaining acreage for permanent and other crops. Opportunities for honey production using stingless bees and a proposed swine project were also raised during the engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President also announced plans to establish a learning centre. A team is expected to visit within three weeks to begin facilitating the initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further improvements are planned for the surrounding recreational grounds, including fencing, grading, levelling and shaping of the area, installation of washroom facilities, development of a cricket pitch and improvements to the pavilion. A section of the grounds will also receive a concrete surface to facilitate basketball and volleyball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On electricity, the President said a six-megawatt power plant will be installed at Moblissa within the next four to five months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So some of the power will go back to Linden, and some of the power will come down the highway. So you’ll have improved supply, increased supply, a more stable supply,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>the President said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is specifically intended to address fluctuations being experienced by residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Housing development was also discussed, with the President calling for collaboration among the Kuru Kuru Co-operative Society, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Housing, Ministry of Public Works and Minister of Public Affairs, Kwame McCoym who holds parliamentary responsibility for the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’ll come up with a solution. All of us will work together to make use of the empty land, to create more lands for housing, and to move towards home ownership,\u201d <\/em><\/strong>he assured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative is expected to create additional opportunities for home ownership as communities along the highway continue to expand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President\u2019s visit also included engagement with young people participating in Government training programmes, as well as discussions on education and transportation needs along the highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He noted that the rapid growth of communities along the corridor has resulted in an increasing number of children travelling to school and highlighted a proposal for an electric bus service to transport students between communities and schools along the highway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
