Maternity services in Region Five have been significantly strengthened since the opening of the Bath Regional Hospital, with more than 300 babies delivered at the facility during its first year of operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 60 newborns have also received specialised care in the hospital\u2019s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU, the first service of its kind in the region. Medical Superintendent Dr. Daniel Robertson says the NICU has reduced the need to transfer vulnerable newborns to hospitals in New Amsterdam or Georgetown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<strong>This service is<\/strong> <strong>for babies that might be born with some defects that would need further medical care. And previously these babies would had to be sent to either New Amsterdam or Georgetown Public Hospital\u2026Overall in the maternity and the neonatal section it is<\/strong> <strong>a great advantage<\/strong>,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Robertson says mothers delivering at the hospital have also benefited from the Government\u2019s 100-thousand-dollar newborn cash grant. He explained that systems are in place to ensure mothers who were not registered during pregnancy can still access the support after giving birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;<strong>There are persons<\/strong> <strong>that come into the facility that did not know that they were pregnant and based on them not knowing they were pregnant, they were not registered to receive the cash grant. However, upon delivery we ensured that those persons are listed and even after they deliver the baby, maybe two to three weeks after, they still would receive their cash grant even though they did not go through the health centre system to register for the cash grant<\/strong>,&#8221; he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expansion of maternity services has also allowed mothers in Region Five to access Caesarean-section deliveries at the hospital, another service that was previously unavailable in the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2013 in first year -by Kyler Rollins Over 300 babies have been successfully delivered at the Bath Regional Hospital since the institution opened its doors one year ago.
