{"id":31019,"date":"2026-07-22T21:19:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T01:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=31019"},"modified":"2026-07-22T21:19:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T01:19:41","slug":"third-person-arrested-as-police-deepen-mv-barima-tragedy-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/third-person-arrested-as-police-deepen-mv-barima-tragedy-investigation\/","title":{"rendered":"Third person arrested as police deepen MV Barima Tragedy investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police have arrested a third person in connection with the investigation into the MV Barima tragedy, as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Guyana\u2019s deadliest maritime disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest person detained is the Transport and Harbours Department (TH&amp;D) superintendent responsible for loading operations at the Kingston wharf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Public Works Minister Bishop Juan Edghill disclosed on Wednesday that the superintendent was invited by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to explain his role in the vessel\u2019s departure before turning himself in accompanied by his attorney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret\u2019d) Mark Phillips confirmed that the court has granted investigators additional time to keep the suspect in custody as the probe continues. He stressed that no criminal charges have yet been laid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phillips emphasised that investigators are following the legal process. Edghill explained that the THD superintendent is responsible for overseeing operations at the wharf, including ticket sales, cargo loading, passenger boarding and the supervision of staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Maritime Administration Director General Stephen Thomas noted that while the superintendent manages shore-side operations, the captain and mate have the ultimate authority to refuse passengers or cargo if they believe the vessel\u2019s safety could be compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest arrest comes as police continue their criminal investigation alongside preparations for an independent Commission of Inquiry into the MV Barima disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two crew members, the captain and first engineer, have already been arrested in the capsizing, which happened seven miles offshore near the Pomeroon River.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police have arrested a third person in connection with the investigation into the MV Barima tragedy, as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Guyana\u2019s deadliest maritime disaster.
