{"id":30923,"date":"2026-07-16T20:05:49","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T00:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=30923"},"modified":"2026-07-16T20:05:49","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T00:05:49","slug":"govt-to-distribute-thousands-of-social-homes-president-ali","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/govt-to-distribute-thousands-of-social-homes-president-ali\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t to distribute thousands of social homes &#8211; President Ali"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-by Jarryl Bryan<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government is working to clear existing housing-related backlogs, with Region Four accounting for over three quarters of all pending applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strategies to address this backlog range from the soon-to-be launched social home programme to the construction of housing units to meet every need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a broadcast earlier today, President Dr. Irfaan Ali addressed one of the most bread-and-butter issues for Guyanese\u2026 housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted that of the 75 to 78 thousand pending applications in the system as of early 2026, close to 50,000 is concentrated in Region Four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address this region, close to 22,000 lots in new areas are being acquired, while some Region Four applicants are being transferred to places like Region Three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the poor and vulnerable, President Ali announced that thousands of social homes will be distributed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said a mechanism will be developed to ensure the most vulnerable, including single mothers, persons with disabilities and the elderly, can be identified for housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;<strong>We are identifying a number of social homes; we\u2019re targeting between 3,000 to 5,000 such homes. We<\/strong> <strong>will be launching that programme soon. We\u2019ll be setting up a strict criterion for persons to have access to those homes<\/strong>,&#8221; <\/em>he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government has also issued tenders for contractors to construct housing units, of varying sizes. President Ali noted that well over 200 expressions of interest have been received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;<strong>We have received more than 270 Expressions of Interest, to construct housing units. And these are from varying prices. And this expression of interest was to help accelerate the development of areas and construction of homes, simultaneously<\/strong>,&#8221;<\/em> he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiatives being rolled out, are in addition to the Dream Realized, Foundation Support, Steel and Cement Subsidy, and other programmes government has already implemented to make housing a reality for thousands of Guyanese.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>-by Jarryl Bryan The government is working to clear existing housing-related backlogs, with Region Four accounting for over three quarters of all pending applications.
