Guyana is set to become a regional center for agricultural innovation\u00a0following the launch of the Caribbean Sustainable Agriculture Science, Technology and Innovation Hub.\u00a0The initiative was officially launched today when Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha signed a letter of intent with Brazil and the Inter-American Institute\u00a0for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hub is expected to facilitate joint research, strengthen scientific capacity\u00a0and accelerate the adoption of technologies tailored to tropical agricultural systems.\u00a0Speaking at the launch, Minister Mustapha underscored the importance of the initiative in advancing food security\u00a0and agricultural modernisation across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is a historic step in promoting innovation,\u00a0applied research and agricultural modernisation in the region.\u00a0Innovation is no longer optional.\u00a0It is essential for our agri-food system and food security,”<\/strong> the minister emphasised. <\/p>\n\n\n

The initiative is being developed to collaboration between Guyana,\u00a0Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation\u00a0and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture, and it will focus on priority areas, including tropical crop\u00a0and livestock systems, climate-smart agriculture and sustainable land-use management.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister Mustapha noted that the hub is a major milestone\u00a0for agricultural development and innovation in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Guyana’s role as the lead country for the CARICOM Ministerial Task Force\u00a0on food production and food security places us\u00a0at the center of the region’s agricultural transformation.\u00a0Hosting this hub is a natural extension of our leadership,”<\/strong> he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Operations are expected to begin during the second half of the year,\u00a0with the initiative expected to strengthen regional collaboration\u00a0and position the Caribbean as a leader in sustainable tropical agricultural innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
