{"id":30130,"date":"2026-05-27T18:10:02","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T22:10:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=30130"},"modified":"2026-05-27T18:10:02","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T22:10:02","slug":"guyana-barbados-launch-digital-id-travel-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/guyana-barbados-launch-digital-id-travel-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Guyana, Barbados launch digital ID travel system"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guyana and Barbados have officially launched a shared digital ID travel system, allowing citizens\u00a0to travel between the two countries using digital identification cards instead of passports.\u00a0The initiative, implemented on May 25, was symbolically launched when Prime Minister\u00a0of Barbados, Mia Mottley, became the first person to use the system while traveling from Barbados\u00a0to Guyana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Dr. Irfaan Ali described the move as a major step forward for deeper regional\u00a0integration, border modernisation and strengthened CARICOM cooperation.<br><br><strong><em>&#8220;This arrangement was approved following the passage of the necessary orders issued in both\u00a0countries, after consultations involving government officials, CARICOM impacts and other regional\u00a0stakeholders. As a result, it is expected to streamline border processing, reduce travel\u00a0friction and enhance convenience for citizens traveling for business, tourism, education\u00a0and family connections<\/em><\/strong>,<strong><em>&#8221; <\/em><\/strong>the president said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley said the initiative is not designed\u00a0to benefit the governments of both alone, nor is it solely for the private sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;It is intended to benefit every single citizen.\u00a0We recognise that anniversaries don&#8217;t and should never just be just simply commemorative.\u00a0That for them to be effective, they must leave a legacy at the personal level in terms of the\u00a0commitments we make, at the national level in terms of the opportunities and the commitments\u00a0that we&#8217;ve made.
