{"id":29764,"date":"2026-05-06T19:05:35","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T23:05:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=29764"},"modified":"2026-05-06T19:05:35","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T23:05:35","slug":"venezuela-continues-to-reject-icj-authority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/venezuela-continues-to-reject-icj-authority\/","title":{"rendered":"Venezuela continues to reject ICJ authority"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>-as border case continues <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>-by NaAsia Bristol<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Venezuela has once again declared that it does not recognise the jurisdiction of the\u00a0International Court of Justice, as hearings continue today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The position, repeated before the court today, underscores Venezuela&#8217;s long-standing\u00a0refusal to accept the ICJ&#8217;s authority in the matter, even as the case moves into its\u00a0critical phase.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guyana, however, maintains that this stance is not new, and had anticipated that Venezuela\u00a0would continue to challenge the court&#8217;s authority throughout the proceedings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday last, Guyana&#8217;s legal team insisted that the 1899 arbitral award remains a final\u00a0and binding settlement of the boundary between the two countries, a position it says is firmly\u00a0grounded in history and international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guyana presented historical accounts and evidence that support its position that the basis for\u00a0Venezuela&#8217;s claim is flawed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor of International Law, Professor Phillipe Sands, said, &#8220;As a source of credible evidence about what happened at the 1899 arbitration, the value\u00a0of the supposed document is zero.\u00a0If you were to conclude otherwise, you would be opening the door to more mischief in the\u00a0future.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appearing before the court on Monday, Foreign Affairs Minister Hugh Todd also stressed the\u00a0gravity of the case, describing it as both straightforward and deeply consequential.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;This case has an existential quality for Guyana.\u00a0A stake is more than 70 per cent of our sovereign territory, which has been recognised to be\u00a0an integral part of the country for more than 126 years,&#8221;<\/strong> he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hearings will continue on Friday, May 8, when Guyana will present its second round\u00a0of oral arguments.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>-as border case continues -by NaAsia Bristol Venezuela has once again declared that it does not recognise the jurisdiction of the\u00a0International Court of Justice, as hearings continue today.
