{"id":29273,"date":"2026-04-08T21:03:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T01:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=29273"},"modified":"2026-04-08T21:03:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T01:03:39","slug":"ag-opposes-return-of-parking-meters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/ag-opposes-return-of-parking-meters\/","title":{"rendered":"AG opposes return of parking meters"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>-warns of serious consequences<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>-by Kimberly Giddings<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney General Anil Nandlall is firmly opposing Georgetown Mayor Alfred Mentor&#8217;s proposal\u00a0to reintroduce parking meters in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He warned the government will not allow the return of any parking meter contracts,\u00a0cautioning that anyone who attempts to enter such agreements will face serious consequences.\u00a0His response follows Mayor Mentor&#8217;s recent interview,\u00a0outlining plans to revisit the controversial project as a solution to city congestion\u00a0and as a possible revenue stream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal comes after the government reclaimed control of 35 city streets\u00a0from the mayor and city council, citing poor maintenance.\u00a0Nandlall criticised the mayor for failing to take responsibility for city management\u00a0and questioned the practicality of parking meters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;That was a conscious decision. We were against it, but we felt that the people of Georgetown\u00a0was doing a far better job, and were we to go out there,\u00a0we would have brought in politics,&#8221;<\/strong> he said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The AG stated that the government will step back and let citizens respond,\u00a0but warned that any attempt to impose a parking meter contract will be blocked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8220;If you believe that you can enter into a contract\u00a0that will impose liability on the treasury of this country,\u00a0the laws of Guyana have the capability\u00a0to ensure that you are held liable to compensate the state\u00a0for the losses that the state may occasion,&#8221;<\/strong> he warned.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The parking meter project, which was first introduced in 2017\u00a0under the APNU+AFC administration,\u00a0was halted after public protests and legal challenges.
