President Dr. Irfaan Ali delivered a heartfelt tribute to Suriname\u2019s former president, Chandrikapersad \u2018Chan\u2019 Santokhi, honoring both their close friendship and strong diplomatic ties during a funeral service at the De Olifant Foundation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting on their close bond, President Ali recalled their first meeting, noting an immediate connection between two ambitious leaders with a shared vision that helped revive relations between Suriname and Guyana. He emphasized that their friendship went beyond official duties.<\/p>\n\n\n

“What began as a murmur between two presidents became a river between two nations and what grew between us was not diplomacy alone. It was something softer, rarer, it was fraternity. To me , president Santhoki was like a brother<\/strong>,”<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Ali said he and Chandrikapersad shared a common vision, believing their countries\u2019 futures were closely linked, with the river serving as a lifeline uniting their peoples, especially in areas of trade, security, and business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Chandrikapersaud Santhoki knew the true partnership\u00a0 between states must live in and true people, markets and the small boats traversing the river that links us,\u201d<\/strong><\/em> <\/strong>the Guyanese leader stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also recalled shared moments with himself, the late Surinamese Prime Minister and Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, noting the strong camaraderie among regional leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chandrikapersad Santokhi, died on Monday, March 30, 2026, at the age of 67.<\/p>\n\n\n
