The Ministry of Health today launched a mass casualty management training aimed at strengthening Guyana\u2019s emergency response capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The workshop is being conducted in partnership with the University of Miami\u2019s Miller School of Medicine and the U.S. Air Force LAMAT 2026 medical mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The four-day initiative targets participants from all regions of Guyana, including Port Health staff, Emergency Medical Technicians, representatives of the Civil Defence Commission, and members of the disciplined services. <\/p>\n\n\n

Speaking at the opening, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony says the training will help build a response-ready team for any emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You don\u2019t know when these things can happen , but when they happen you need to be prepared so that is why working with the doctors, nurses, some agencies like police, the CDC, once we can have that inter agency support our response can be quicker, stronger and better for the people<\/strong>,” he said. <\/p>\n\n\n

Meanwhile, U.S. Air Force Colonel Theodore Liszeski, explained that their role is to support the University of Miami in responding to natural disasters such as floods or oil spills, ensuring that first responders are quickly deployed on-site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The<\/strong> training from the Miami university will be first hands-on type, so when they triage them\u00a0 our part will be working with the hospital team for the next level of care, so we want from ground level, first responders all the way through the healthcare system<\/strong>,” Col. Liszeski explained. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lesser Antilles Medical Assistance Team 2026 was launched last Monday and is part of a broader health cooperation initiative between Guyana and the United States. This marks the third mission in Guyana, following successful engagements in 2023 and 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
