Residents of West Ruimveldt are now benefiting from a more expansive quality of life as an upgraded playfield was handed over on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gilhouse Square Playfield underwent renovations to the tune of $13 million. <\/p>\n\n\n

Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Steven Jacobs, in the simple handing over ceremony explained that the upgrade was done following recent engagement with the community to ascertain what immediate needs can be addressed by the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is an investment that we sought fit for this area\u2026 and this is a model that we will be spreading across the entire country. When we promise something (as government), I want you to know that we will always deliver, and we will come back and visit you,\u201d<\/strong> Minister Jacobs said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main upgrades at the facility included the installation of lights, the construction and painting of the basketball court and outfitting it with basketball rings; marking and leveling of a football pitch, installing a perimeter fence, and exterior preparation for the provision of space for parking.<\/p>\n\n\n

Also present at the handing over was Minister of Labour and Manpower Planning, who hails from a neighbouring community. In his brief remarks, Minister Griffith shared with the residents that the government engages actively in consultation with residents and citizens before making any decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery time we do that, it is not for a PR stunt, it is not for the politics of it, it is because we want to know how we can put you first,\u201d <\/strong>Griffith pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Gilhouse Playfield upgrades also included the provision of waste disposal equipment from the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This facility upgrade forms part of a larger initiative by the government to transform communities all across the country, while providing community based infrastructure and access to recreation.<\/p>\n\n\n
