Rice farmers in Region Two are celebrating the government\u2019s $300 per bag paddy subsidy, aimed at easing production costs and supporting livelihoods. The initiative is part of a $2.1 billion national programme to strengthen Guyana\u2019s rice industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rollout took place at the Anna Regina Town Council Compound, led by Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha, who was joined by regional officials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farmers in the region are set to benefit from over $990 million in support, including fertiliser, seed paddy, pest control chemicals, and transportation subsidies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farmers expressed profound gratitude for the timely support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rohan Persaud said, \u201cThis subsidy will help me maintain my farm and buy fertiliser. It comes at the right time.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another farmer, Savita Lall added, \u201cIt allows us to plan ahead and invest in our farms. We are very grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister Mustapha emphasised that the government remains committed to sustaining the rice sector, improving infrastructure, and expanding production in Region Two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This exercise forms part of a broader $2.1 billion programme aimed at providing financial relief to the nation’s rice farmers. It is designed to help farmers offset rising production costs\u2014including seeds, fertiliser, and labor\u2014while stabilising their incomes against fluctuating global market prices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It fulfills a commitment made by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, and began its rollout in Region Five, where over 1,600 farmers received an initial distribution of approximately $480.5 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
