{"id":27716,"date":"2026-01-08T11:09:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T15:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=27716"},"modified":"2026-01-08T11:09:01","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T15:09:01","slug":"this-is-not-a-game-of-chess-magistrate-cautions-against-further-delays-as-extradition-proceedings-adjourned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/this-is-not-a-game-of-chess-magistrate-cautions-against-further-delays-as-extradition-proceedings-adjourned\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThis is not a game of chess,\u201d Magistrate cautions against further delays as extradition proceedings adjourned"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Extradition proceedings in the matter involving Azruddin Mohamed and his father Nazar Mohamed were adjourned today following a late disclosure by the prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Principal Magistrate, Judy Latchman, stated firmly that there would be no further delays after today, noting that \u201cthis is not a game of chess; there will be no jumping,\u201d as she cautioned both sides on the importance of moving the matter forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During today\u2019s hearing, lead prosecutor Terrence Williams, K.C., made a further disclosure to the court, submitting a statement from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams informed the court that the statement forms part of the prosecution\u2019s disclosure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defence attorneys immediately objected, requesting that the extradition proceedings be halted or adjourned to allow them time to review and respond to the new material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They told the court that they had not received the disclosure, which was reportedly emailed by Glenn Hanoman on Wednesday, January 8, at approximately 1:00 am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magistrate Latchman questioned the prosecution as to whether there would be any additional disclosures, to which Williams responded that there would be none beyond what had already been provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He then added that if something arises that requires a disclosure, it is their duty to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The magistrate, however, stated that there will be no further disclosure, and that today\u2019s is the last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also acknowledged the defence\u2019 s position, stating that counsel must be given adequate time to obtain further instructions in light of the new disclosure.
