{"id":27402,"date":"2025-11-11T16:40:15","date_gmt":"2025-11-11T16:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=27402"},"modified":"2025-11-11T16:48:17","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T16:48:17","slug":"guyanas-womens-basketball-team-strongest-in-a-long-time-toney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/guyanas-womens-basketball-team-strongest-in-a-long-time-toney\/","title":{"rendered":"Guyana\u2019s Women\u2019s Basketball Team strongest in a long time &#8211; Toney"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>By Tyriq Walters<\/em><\/h6>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">Vice President of the Guyana Basketball Federation (GBF), Rawle Toney, says he believes this year\u2019s women\u2019s national basketball team is the strongest he has seen in a long time as Guyana prepares to host the FIBA Women\u2019s Caribbean Championship at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">\u201cI think this is one of the best women\u2019s teams that we\u2019ve had in quite a number of years,\u201d Toney said. \u201cI would even go as far as to say it\u2019s the best team since Karen Abrams captained us to the title in 1996 in Trinidad when we beat Jamaica in the final.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">Toney said the team is filled with experienced players, including professionals Joy Adams, Anaya Clemons, and Ruth Adams, who all play in European leagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">He said the players are setting a great example for young girls in Guyana, showing them what they can achieve through basketball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">\u201cMost of these women were born in Guyana, and they\u2019re showing the girls at home that if they keep playing, they can reach the top too,\u201d he highlighted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">Guyana will play four matches in the round-robin tournament against The Bahamas, Virgin Islands, Suriname, and Jamaica, starting Tuesday night. The top three teams will qualify for the 2026 Centrobasket Women\u2019s Championship.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/basketball-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/basketball-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/basketball-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/basketball-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/basketball.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><em>Guyana&#8217;s schedule<\/em><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">Toney said the goal is clear: win every game and finish as the top team in the Caribbean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking to win all four games and head to Centrobasket as number one,\u201d the basketball vice president said confidently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:20px\">The team will be led by Head Coach Kenny Avent, as he will be assisted by Warren Wilson and Willon Cameron.
