{"id":26885,"date":"2025-03-12T15:25:54","date_gmt":"2025-03-12T15:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=26885"},"modified":"2025-03-12T15:25:55","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T15:25:55","slug":"new-legislation-to-strengthen-guyanas-crime-fighting-capabilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/new-legislation-to-strengthen-guyanas-crime-fighting-capabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"New Legislation to Strengthen Guyana\u2019s Crime-Fighting Capabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><em>By Celestine Chacon<\/em><br><em>February 13, 2025<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a move aimed at enhancing Guyana&#8217;s crime-fighting efforts, the government is set to introduce a series of new bills in the National Assembly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, announced that three critical bills will be tabled at the upcoming sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include the Advance Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record Bill, the CARICOM Arrest Warrant Bill, and the Regional Security Systems Bill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latter, based on a CARICOM model, will integrate regional security measures into Guyana\u2019s law enforcement framework, aligning the country with broader regional security initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Celestine-AG-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Nandlall also revealed that the bills are part of a series of regional treaties Guyana has signed with CARICOM. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these crime-fighting measures, a proposal will be put forward to address the growing backlog of cases in the Court of Appeal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed legislation would increase the number of judges, thus improving the efficiency of the judicial system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Celestine-AG-2.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of judges in the Court of Appeal will rise from nine to eleven, complementing the recent increase in High Court judges from twelve to twenty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These legislative measures are seen as key steps toward improving Guyana&#8217;s law enforcement services and bolstering the country\u2019s overall crime-fighting strategy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Celestine ChaconFebruary 13, 2025 In a move aimed at enhancing Guyana&#8217;s crime-fighting efforts, the government is set to introduce a series of new bills in the National Assembly.
