{"id":26630,"date":"2025-02-20T14:50:45","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T14:50:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=26630"},"modified":"2025-02-20T14:50:47","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T14:50:47","slug":"new-pump-station-commissioned-at-montrose-to-enhance-flood-resilience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/new-pump-station-commissioned-at-montrose-to-enhance-flood-resilience\/","title":{"rendered":"New Pump Station Commissioned at Montrose to Enhance Flood Resilience"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><em>By Saskia Warrick<\/em><br><em>February 1, 2025<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The drainage infrastructure along the East Coast of Demerara has been further strengthened with the commissioning of a rehabilitated pump station at Montrose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The $220 million facility, equipped with a 200-cusec pump, will serve over 4,000 acres of farmland and provide flood relief to communities including Montrose, Success, Mon Repos, Better Hope, Vryheid\u2019s Lust, and Plaisance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha highlighted that over the past four years, the government has invested more than $11 billion in acquiring pumps and developing drainage infrastructure to mitigate the impact of flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis will help to significantly reduce the risk of flooding and ensure that our farmlands and communities remain protected,\u201d Minister Mustapha stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also announced that several additional pump stations will be commissioned in the coming months, with three set to become operational within the next two weeks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These projects are part of a nationwide initiative to establish a comprehensive and climate-resilient drainage system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For 2025, the government has allocated $73.2 billion toward upgrading and expanding Guyana\u2019s drainage and irrigation network, ensuring long-term sustainability for the agricultural sector and vulnerable communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Saskia WarrickFebruary 1, 2025 The drainage infrastructure along the East Coast of Demerara has been further strengthened with the commissioning of a rehabilitated pump station at Montrose.
