{"id":26620,"date":"2025-02-20T14:26:25","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T14:26:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=26620"},"modified":"2025-02-20T14:26:26","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T14:26:26","slug":"demerara-harbour-bridge-employees-will-not-be-displaced-minister-edghill-assures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/demerara-harbour-bridge-employees-will-not-be-displaced-minister-edghill-assures\/","title":{"rendered":"Demerara Harbour Bridge Employees Will Not Be Displaced \u2013 Minister Edghill Assures"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><em>By Celestine Chacon<\/em><br><em>February 1, 2025<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation (DHBC) will not be left without jobs once the new Demerara River Bridge becomes operational. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This assurance was given by Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill, during the Parliamentary Committee of Supply\u2019s review of the 2025 budget estimates on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The matter was raised by Opposition Member of Parliament, David Patterson, who expressed concerns about the job security of the 155 Guyanese workers currently employed at DHBC. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Minister Edghill dismissed any fears of job losses, reaffirming the government\u2019s commitment to ensuring continued employment for the workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis caring government will not throw any of them to the curb because of a new bridge. We will not do that. That is not in our DNA, it is not our modus operandi, it is not in our conscience. We are a caring government,\u201d Edghill stated.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The minister further revealed that the matter had already been addressed with DHBC employees earlier this year, on January 1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He highlighted that their specialised skills would remain in demand, particularly for the dismantling and potential relocation of the existing bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cTheir services will always be needed. We haven\u2019t gotten to the stage of severance. They will continue to be employed somewhere.
