{"id":26419,"date":"2025-02-09T01:50:18","date_gmt":"2025-02-09T01:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=26419"},"modified":"2025-02-09T01:50:18","modified_gmt":"2025-02-09T01:50:18","slug":"government-increases-old-age-pension-and-social-support-in-2025-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/government-increases-old-age-pension-and-social-support-in-2025-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"Government Increases Old Age Pension and Social Support in 2025 Budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><em>By Celestine Chacon | January 20, 2025<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Effective January 1, 2025, Guyana&#8217;s Old Age Pension has increased by 14%, moving from $36,000 to $41,000 per month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The adjustment, announced by Senior Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh during the 2025 budget presentation, marks a continued effort to enhance financial stability for the country&#8217;s elderly population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 76,000 pensioners are set to benefit from this increase, which will inject an additional $4.5 billion into the local economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, highlighted that this adjustment fulfills the government\u2019s 2020 commitment to double the pension amount, which then stood at $20,500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the pension increase, Public Assistance has been raised from $19,000 to $22,000 per month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This measure is aimed at further supporting vulnerable groups across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2025 budget also includes allocations for social programs designed to assist women and marginalized communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dr. Singh, 5,900 women received training in 2024 under government programs, and an additional 11,200 women are expected to benefit in 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The budget will also continue funding shelters, counseling services, and anti-trafficking initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a total of $58.5 billion allocated for social services in 2025\u2014an increase from the $46.9 billion spent in 2024\u2014the government continues to prioritize the welfare of its citizens, reinforcing its commitment to social and economic support.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Celestine Chacon | January 20, 2025 Effective January 1, 2025, Guyana&#8217;s Old Age Pension has increased by 14%, moving from $36,000 to $41,000 per month.
