{"id":26058,"date":"2025-02-01T21:53:05","date_gmt":"2025-02-01T21:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=26058"},"modified":"2025-02-01T21:53:06","modified_gmt":"2025-02-01T21:53:06","slug":"state-appeals-24m-compensation-awarded-to-bacchus-estate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/state-appeals-24m-compensation-awarded-to-bacchus-estate\/","title":{"rendered":"State Appeals $24M Compensation Awarded to Bacchus Estate"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><em>By Saskia Warrick, NCN News \u2013 December 30, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The State has filed an appeal challenging the $24 million compensation awarded to the estate of Quindon Bacchus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The appeal, filed after a ruling by Justice Nigel Niles on November 13, 2024, cites concerns over the judge\u2019s assessment of damages in the high-profile case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The compensation, which includes funeral expenses and legal costs, was granted to Bacchus\u2019 estate after he was fatally shot by police on June 10, 2022, at Haslington, East Coast Demerara. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The State has acknowledged liability for the incident but argued that the compensation was excessive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Solicitor General Nigel Hawke contended that the judge had exceeded his authority by not adequately considering key evidence, resulting in an inflated award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, expressed support for the appeal, emphasizing the importance of adhering to legal precedents when assessing compensation claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shooting of Bacchus by police officers, which occurred without official authorization, led to further investigations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alleged firearm recovered at the scene was found to be inoperable, and no witnesses confirmed that Bacchus fired at the police. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lance Corporal Kristoff DeNobrega was charged with Bacchus&#8217; murder, while two other officers\u2014Lance Corporal Simon and Sergeant McLennon\u2014were charged with attempting to obstruct justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The appeal process is now underway.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Saskia Warrick, NCN News \u2013 December 30, 2024 The State has filed an appeal challenging the $24 million compensation awarded to the estate of Quindon Bacchus.
