(GPI) has taken a significant step to improve the country\u2019s waterways with the commissioning of a new $4 million dredger, a move set to boost trade and economic activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Damen Cutter Suction Dredger 350, which was commissioned over the weekend, boasts a robust and efficient design that ensures low maintenance while maintaining navigability in Guyana&#8217;s waterways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill, emphasized the critical role of waterways, noting that 80% of goods movement in the country is reliant on them due to their cost efficiency and capacity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new dredger is expected to facilitate the passage of larger vessels, thereby increasing trade volume and reducing associated costs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Edghill also encouraged private sector participation in transforming the sector to enhance the country&#8217;s maritime capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pritipaul Singh Jr., Managing Director of GPI, highlighted that the investment aligns with Guyana&#8217;s broader goals of enhancing infrastructure to meet growing demands, positioning the country as a competitive player in global maritime trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This new development signals a promising future for Guyana\u2019s maritime sector as the nation continues to push for sustainable growth through strategic investments in infrastructure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Saskia Warrick | November 18, 2024 Guyana Port Inc.
