{"id":25010,"date":"2024-12-13T16:52:33","date_gmt":"2024-12-13T16:52:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=25010"},"modified":"2024-12-13T16:52:35","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T16:52:35","slug":"46-years-since-the-jonestown-massacre-a-survivors-recollection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/46-years-since-the-jonestown-massacre-a-survivors-recollection\/","title":{"rendered":"46 Years Since the Jonestown Massacre: A Survivor&#8217;s Recollection"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><em>By Celestine Chacon<\/em><br><em>November 18, 2024<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today marks the 46th anniversary of the Jonestown Massacre, one of the most devastating events in Guyana&#8217;s history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 900 people lost their lives in the People\u2019s Temple settlement on November 18, 1978, leaving an indelible mark on the country and the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charles Leung, now 72 years old and a former laborer for the People\u2019s Temple, recounted the traumatic events during an interview with NCN News. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of the massacre, Leung was 26 and living near the settlement with his family in Port Kaituma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leung recalled the moment he first became aware of the tragedy. He and his wife were at home when the sound of gunfire shattered the quiet afternoon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His two children, who had ventured near the airstrip, came running back in panic, shouting that \u201cwhite people\u201d were shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the fear, Leung approached the airstrip, only to discover five lifeless bodies on the ground amid the chaos of screams and shouting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As news spread, the scale of the horror became evident: hundreds of People\u2019s Temple members had died after consuming cyanide-laced drinks on the orders of their leader, Jim Jones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The massacre transformed the People\u2019s Temple into a graveyard and left an enduring legacy of tragedy in Guyana\u2019s history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Celestine ChaconNovember 18, 2024 Today marks the 46th anniversary of the Jonestown Massacre, one of the most devastating events in Guyana&#8217;s history.
