{"id":21919,"date":"2024-09-02T16:37:03","date_gmt":"2024-09-02T16:37:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=21919"},"modified":"2024-09-02T16:37:34","modified_gmt":"2024-09-02T16:37:34","slug":"mazaruni-prison-overcrowding-resolved-with-700-million-expansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/mazaruni-prison-overcrowding-resolved-with-700-million-expansion\/","title":{"rendered":"Mazaruni Prison Overcrowding Resolved with $700 Million Expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>By Kristin Josiah<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue of overcrowding at Mazaruni Prison has been effectively addressed following a significant expansion and modernization project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facility, which now comfortably accommodates around 200 inmates, has seen improvements thanks to an investment of over $700 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Carlton Cameron, Officer-in-Charge of Mazaruni Prison, the completed Phase Two of the rehabilitation project includes enhanced living quarters for inmates and dedicated housing for prison officers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This expansion has enabled the prison to facilitate various activities, such as skills training and monitored recreation, within a more conducive environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt our location, I can safely say we are now in a position to offer improved living conditions for inmates,\u201d Cameron stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project also includes the construction of ten new living quarters for prison officers, valued at over $89 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These new accommodations aim to support officers who travel from various regions, such as New Amsterdam, Linden, and Georgetown, to serve at the prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese officers who are living in New Amsterdam, Linden, Georgetown, leaving the comfort of their own home, are essential to the functioning of the prison system,\u201d Cameron noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional developments include the near-completion of a new watchtower and the ongoing reconstruction of the officers\u2019 mess, which is set to provide recreational space for both senior and junior officers at a cost of over $57 million.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Kristin Josiah The issue of overcrowding at Mazaruni Prison has been effectively addressed following a significant expansion and modernization project.
