{"id":21307,"date":"2024-07-16T20:21:41","date_gmt":"2024-07-16T20:21:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=21307"},"modified":"2024-07-16T20:22:01","modified_gmt":"2024-07-16T20:22:01","slug":"guyana-acquires-capping-stack-for-oil-spill-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/guyana-acquires-capping-stack-for-oil-spill-response\/","title":{"rendered":"Guyana Acquires Capping Stack for Oil Spill Response"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><strong>By Josiah Williams<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guyana has officially received its own capping stack, a crucial piece of equipment that can be utilized in the event of an oil spill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This significant acquisition aims to enhance the country&#8217;s readiness and response capabilities for potential oil spill incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A capping stack is a large device placed over an oil wellhead, acting like a \u201ccap\u201d to stop an oil leak until engineers can permanently seal the well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The capping stack is essential for controlling oil spills and mitigating environmental damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge emphasized the importance of safety during a media event held to unveil the new equipment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that this is the first capping stack in Guyana and one of only 13 globally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Routledge highlighted that the capping stack will be integrated into regular joint emergency exercises conducted by ExxonMobil at the GYBSI shore base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The capping stack will complement other state-of-the-art oil spill response equipment available in Guyana, including containment booms, skimmer devices, and dispersants. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Routledge expressed hope that the equipment would never need to be used but assured that it would be maintained and ready for deployment if necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The acquisition of the capping stack is part of the environmental permit requirements granted to ExxonMobil for their fourth project, Yellowtail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The capping stack is owned by Oil Spill Response Limited, with Exxon subscribing to their capping stack service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ExxonMobil was among the first oil and gas operators to integrate capping stack technology into their oil spill response planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This development underscores Guyana&#8217;s commitment to environmental safety and preparedness as the country continues to develop its oil and gas industry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Josiah Williams Guyana has officially received its own capping stack, a crucial piece of equipment that can be utilized in the event of an oil spill.
