The government has unveiled its $840 million Eye Testing and Spectacles Programme, set to benefit hundreds of thousands of Guyanese. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch ceremony took place at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, where Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony detailed the initiative’s benefits and implementation strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The programme will distribute vouchers through regional bodies, ministries, and other stakeholders to ensure comprehensive reach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To accommodate all eligible persons, private optometry agencies will conduct outreaches across the country, including regions where they currently have no branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Anthony explained that private optometry agencies will provide dates for their visits to various regions, ensuring that residents in those areas have access to eye screenings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This partnership with private agencies is crucial as the public health system alone cannot manage the expected high volume of testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vouchers for eye testing are valued at $2,000. If a prescription is needed, the recipient will receive an additional $15,000 voucher to cover the cost of spectacles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Health Minister emphasized the importance of this programme, encouraging individuals under the age of 18 and those over 65 to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance ophthalmology services across Guyana. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
