{"id":20127,"date":"2024-05-30T16:36:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T16:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=20127"},"modified":"2024-05-30T16:36:01","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T16:36:01","slug":"60-acre-community-farm-to-boost-sand-hills-and-low-wood-villages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/60-acre-community-farm-to-boost-sand-hills-and-low-wood-villages\/","title":{"rendered":"60-Acre Community Farm to Boost Sand Hills and Low Wood Villages"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><em>By Josiah Williams<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sand Hills, a community in the Demerara River region, is set to benefit from a new 60-acre community farm aimed at producing high-value crops year-round. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance the economic and agricultural landscape of communities along the Demerara River in Region 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a recent visit to Sand Hills and Low Wood Village, President Dr. Irfaan Ali discussed the government&#8217;s ongoing efforts to boost local economies and agricultural production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new farm is expected to make a significant impact by providing each of the approximately 30 families involved with a highly intensive farming area of about two acres each. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan includes cultivating crops like plantains, which take about nine months to grow, alongside quicker-growing crops such as watermelon and pumpkin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government aims to set competitive prices for the farm&#8217;s produce to ensure consistent availability for agro processors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, President Ali emphasized the importance of involving women in agriculture through the establishment of honey production and shade house operations in both Sand Hills and Low Wood Village. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women in these communities will receive the necessary materials to set up shade houses and will be trained in beekeeping, with all required equipment provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further support includes the introduction of cargo boats to transport produce to larger markets, improving market access for local farmers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Health teams will also be sent to provide medical, dental, and optical services, addressing healthcare needs in these communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, there are plans to establish a ministry dedicated to tourism to explore potential tourism opportunities in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative reflects the government&#8217;s commitment to empowering local communities and enhancing their economic resilience through sustainable agricultural practices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Josiah Williams Sand Hills, a community in the Demerara River region, is set to benefit from a new 60-acre community farm aimed at producing high-value crops year-round.
