{"id":19398,"date":"2024-05-03T19:59:35","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T19:59:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=19398"},"modified":"2024-05-03T19:59:36","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T19:59:36","slug":"ag-assesses-case-against-vp-jagdeo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/ag-assesses-case-against-vp-jagdeo\/","title":{"rendered":"AG Assesses Case Against VP Jagdeo"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><em>By Saskia Warrick<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney General Anil Nandlall has weighed in on the case seeking the removal of Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo from the National Assembly, deeming it premature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In February, Opposition Parliamentarians Christopher Jones and Tabitha Sarabo-Halley initiated legal action to oust Vice President Jagdeo, alleging his absence from 11 consecutive sittings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Nandlall asserts that the matter should first be addressed with the Speaker of the National Assembly rather than the judiciary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Nandlall, a motion must be tabled in the National Assembly to establish the truth before resorting to legal action. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Saskia-VP-Removal-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He highlights that the absence of this procedural step makes the case vulnerable to failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/Saskia-VP-Removal-2.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Referring to Chapter XIII of the Standing Orders of the National Assembly, Nandlall explains the requirement for members to notify the Clerk if unable to attend sittings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure to do so may lead to the vacation of the member&#8217;s seat after a specific period of consecutive absences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nandlall expresses confidence that without following due process, the case seeking Jagdeo&#8217;s removal will not succeed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Saskia Warrick Attorney General Anil Nandlall has weighed in on the case seeking the removal of Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo from the National Assembly, deeming it premature.
