{"id":18380,"date":"2024-04-11T16:03:47","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T16:03:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=18380"},"modified":"2024-04-11T16:03:48","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T16:03:48","slug":"guyana-power-light-faces-multifaceted-challenge-amidst-increasing-power-outages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/guyana-power-light-faces-multifaceted-challenge-amidst-increasing-power-outages\/","title":{"rendered":"Guyana Power &amp; Light Faces Multifaceted Challenge Amidst Increasing Power Outages"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>By Saskia Warrick<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guyana Power &amp; Light (GPL) is confronting a complex challenge as power outages become more frequent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Irfaan Ali has urged the utility company to explore alternative options to provide &#8216;bridging energy&#8217; to meet the demand while awaiting the completion of the gas-fired power plant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Ali revealed that GPL is grappling with insufficient power capacity and a human resources gap, leading to operational deficiencies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a demand growth of around 35 megawatts this year, there is an urgent need to fill these vacancies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Should there continue to be a shortage of technical experts domestically, the government is prepared to recruit foreign technical support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly, President Ali disclosed that the government has engaged UK Export Finance (UKEF) to explore financing options for the transmission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This move underscores the government&#8217;s commitment to addressing the energy crisis comprehensively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, there is a demand for 220 megawatts of power, but GPL is only generating 165 megawatts at peak hours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This imbalance highlights the urgent need for proactive measures to bridge the gap between demand and supply.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Saskia Warrick Guyana Power &amp; Light (GPL) is confronting a complex challenge as power outages become more frequent.
