{"id":18026,"date":"2024-04-05T01:07:59","date_gmt":"2024-04-05T01:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=18026"},"modified":"2024-04-05T01:08:30","modified_gmt":"2024-04-05T01:08:30","slug":"guyana-denounces-venezuelas-recent-law-on-essequibo-territory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/guyana-denounces-venezuelas-recent-law-on-essequibo-territory\/","title":{"rendered":"Guyana Denounces Venezuela&#8217;s Recent Law on Essequibo Territory"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><em>By Josiah Williams<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Guyana Government has expressed deep concern over Venezuela&#8217;s violation of the principles and good faith discussions regarding the demarcation of the Essequibo territory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a recent move, Venezuela passed a law demarcating Essequibo as its own territory, disregarding previous agreements such as the Argyle Declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reports from Reuters, the Venezuelan National Assembly unanimously voted to create a new state and officially include Essequibo in their maps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, condemned this action, stating that it blatantly violates principles of democracy, international law, and previous agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview, Minister Benn emphasized Guyana&#8217;s commitment to peaceful resolution through legal channels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He reiterated Guyana&#8217;s stance that the matter will be handled through the International Court of Justice (ICJ), expressing confidence that Guyana&#8217;s position will be vindicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite tensions between the two countries, a commitment was made in December to refrain from using force or escalating tensions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Benn reiterated Guyana&#8217;s commitment to this agreement, emphasizing the importance of pursuing legal avenues for resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The law passed by Venezuela&#8217;s National Assembly will come into force pending approval by the country&#8217;s highest court and publication in the official gazette.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Josiah Williams The Guyana Government has expressed deep concern over Venezuela&#8217;s violation of the principles and good faith discussions regarding the demarcation of the Essequibo territory.
