{"id":16488,"date":"2024-02-12T21:26:36","date_gmt":"2024-02-12T21:26:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=16488"},"modified":"2024-02-12T21:26:38","modified_gmt":"2024-02-12T21:26:38","slug":"attorney-general-accuses-opposition-of-targeting-acting-commissioner-of-police-in-lawsuit-dismissal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/attorney-general-accuses-opposition-of-targeting-acting-commissioner-of-police-in-lawsuit-dismissal\/","title":{"rendered":"Attorney General Accuses Opposition of Targeting Acting Commissioner of Police in Lawsuit Dismissal"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p><strong><em>By Samuel Sukhnandan<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has leveled accusations against the opposition, alleging a &#8220;personal vendetta&#8221; against acting Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorney General Anil Nandlall specifically referenced the recent dismissal of a lawsuit challenging the retirement age of Hicken, which was thrown out by the High Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking during his weekly program &#8216;Issues in the News&#8217; on Tuesday evening, Attorney General Anil Nandlall criticized the opposition&#8217;s actions regarding the lawsuit, which was filed by APNU Member Carol Joseph. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawsuit contested the legality of extending the tenure of an acting Commissioner of Police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nandlall recalled a previous lawsuit filed by Executive Member of the PNC and Opposition MP, Christopher Jones, when Hicken was initially appointed to the position. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Samuel-AG-CJ-Dismissal-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On that occasion, the challenge was unsuccessful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the recent case brought by Joseph, acting Chief Justice Roxane George dismissed the lawsuit after reviewing arguments from both sides. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chief Justice ruled that the statutory provisions applicable to a substantive Commissioner of Police also apply to an acting Commissioner of Police, as envisioned by the framers of the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clifton Hicken assumed the role of acting Commissioner of Police in March 2022 following the retirement of Nigel Hoppie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hicken, who reached the age of 55 years, the retirement age, last month, has been the subject of legal scrutiny regarding his tenure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Samuel Sukhnandan The government has leveled accusations against the opposition, alleging a &#8220;personal vendetta&#8221; against acting Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken.
