Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh presented the historic Budget 2024, totaling $1.146 trillion, marking a 46 percent increase over the previous year’s budget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This landmark budget, the largest in Guyana’s history, is poised to address critical aspects of the nation’s development, focusing on alleviating the rising cost of living and introducing measures to benefit citizens across various demographics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the notable highlights is the increase in the income tax threshold, rising from $85,000 to $100,000 monthly, effective from the year of income 2024. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This adjustment is expected to benefit around 13,000 individuals, resulting in a $4.8 billion increase in disposable income for workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Budget 2024 allocates substantial funds to improve the welfare of pensioners, with an increase in old age pension from $33,000 to $36,000 and public assistance from $16,000 to $19,000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the minimum pension paid by the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) will rise from $35,000 to $43,000, accompanied by an increase in the pension for survivors from $17,500 to $21,537.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government introduces a one-off grant for individuals aged 60 and above who haven’t met the minimum contribution requirement for NIS old age pension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eligible individuals with contributions ranging from 700 to 749 will have the option to receive a one-off grant, benefiting over 3,800 persons at a cost of $550 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To address the impact of the rising cost of living, Budget 2024 includes a $7 billion allocation, subject to citizen consultations for effective expenditure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other measures encompass sustained reduction in freight charges, an expanded part-time job program with over $10 billion allocated, and eye care initiatives for school children and pensioners, valued at $1.8 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to health challenges, Budget 2024 introduces support for cervical cancer testing, a vital intervention costing approximately $2.8 billion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minister Singh emphasizes the budget’s resilience in the face of challenges, aiming to pave the way for prosperity for all Guyanese citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comprehensive budget allocation covers various sectors, including $121.4 billion for wages and salaries for central government employees, $135.2 billion for the education system, $129.8 billion for the health sector, $204.1 billion for road and bridge infrastructure, $95.7 billion for the energy sector, $78 billion for housing programs, and $72.3 billion for drainage and irrigation infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
