{"id":15437,"date":"2024-01-11T15:42:37","date_gmt":"2024-01-11T15:42:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=15437"},"modified":"2024-01-11T15:42:38","modified_gmt":"2024-01-11T15:42:38","slug":"agriculture-expanding-in-hinterland-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/agriculture-expanding-in-hinterland-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"Agriculture Expanding in Hinterland Communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Agriculture in Guyana&#8217;s hinterland regions is undergoing significant expansion, transitioning from subsistence farming to community-based farming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Pauline Sukhai, shared that the construction of 17 shade houses has played a pivotal role in this transformation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move towards community-based agriculture is evident in the shift from individual subsistence farming to larger community plots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Several communities, including Kumu and Moca Moca, have been pioneers in this shift, cultivating crops like rice and peas on a larger scale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The development is part of an effort to enhance food production and sustainable agricultural practices in hinterland regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, approximately 261 million dollars were allocated for agricultural development in hinterland communities through Presidential grants, supporting 38 projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Josiah-Hinterland-Farming-2.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Notably, 17 shade houses were constructed at a cost of around 85 million dollars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Sukhai highlighted the growing demand for shade houses, emphasizing their importance in advancing food production in various villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Irfaan Ali has expressed the feasibility of constructing shade houses in communities with school feeding programs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Efforts are also underway to improve transport infrastructure for the efficient transportation of produce from hinterland regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commitment to agricultural expansion and community-based farming reflects a broader strategy to enhance food security, promote sustainable practices, and uplift livelihoods in Guyana&#8217;s hinterland communities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Agriculture in Guyana&#8217;s hinterland regions is undergoing significant expansion, transitioning from subsistence farming to community-based farming.
