{"id":15134,"date":"2024-01-04T18:21:07","date_gmt":"2024-01-04T18:21:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/?p=15134"},"modified":"2024-01-04T18:21:08","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T18:21:08","slug":"minister-of-health-updates-on-treatment-of-infectious-diseases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/minister-of-health-updates-on-treatment-of-infectious-diseases\/","title":{"rendered":"Minister of Health Updates on Treatment of Infectious Diseases"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony provided an end-of-year progress report, highlighting Guyana&#8217;s efforts to eliminate several infectious diseases, including filaria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guyana currently faces five of the 20 Neglected Tropical Diseases listed by the World Health Organization, namely Filaria, Leishmaniasis, Leprosy, Chagas, and Worms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ministry aims to eliminate these diseases by the year 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Anthony expressed optimism about eliminating Lymphatic filariasis within the next two years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mass interventions by the ministry have already led to the elimination of this disease in most of Guyana&#8217;s administrative regions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/DELICIA-INFECTIOUS-DISEASE-1.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining cases are concentrated in regions 4 and 3, where focused efforts are underway to achieve elimination status by the end of the next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding another infectious disease, Hepatitis C, Minister Anthony highlighted significant progress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guyana is the first country to roll out a program for the treatment of Hepatitis C. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/ncnguyana.com\/2023\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/DELICIA-INFECTIOUS-DISEASE-2.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial cost of Hep C treatment was around US$80,000 per patient, but through special arrangements with the Pan American Health Organization (PHAO), the ministry has been able to procure medications for less than US$200 per patient. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program has successfully treated about 44 patients, with an additional 22 undergoing treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2023, the ministry diagnosed and treated 30 cases of leprosy, providing necessary treatment for individuals who had contact with the affected patients. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minister Anthony&#8217;s update reflects the ongoing efforts to combat infectious diseases and enhance public health in Guyana.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony provided an end-of-year progress report, highlighting Guyana&#8217;s efforts to eliminate several infectious diseases, including filaria.
