At the conclusion of the National Toshaos’ Council (NTC) conference, President Irfaan Ali announced a series of immediate and long-term interventions aimed at addressing the concerns raised by Amerindian leaders during the four-day event. These initiatives are intended to strengthen, sustain, and fortify the resilience of communities in Guyana, particularly those located in the hinterland regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the conference, numerous issues were brought to the forefront, including challenges related to access to electricity, clean water, and road infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response to these concerns, President Irfaan Ali revealed several significant initiatives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Continuation of Solar Household Units: The distribution of solar household units will be continued, emphasizing the importance of sustainable and clean energy sources for hinterland communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Provision of Black Tanks: 2,000 black tanks will be made available to various villages, ensuring improved water storage facilities and access to clean water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Funding for Community Grounds: An allocation of 100 million Guyanese dollars will be dedicated to funding and enhancing community grounds, which serve as vital hubs for social and cultural activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Hinterland Infrastructure Investment: The government will invest over 16 billion Guyanese dollars in hinterland infrastructure for the remainder of 2023, with a focus on improving road networks and essential amenities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. 2024 Budget Priorities: Looking ahead, President Ali announced that 7 billion Guyanese dollars will be set aside in the 2024 budget for several priority projects in the hinterland, addressing critical community needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chair of the National Toshaos Council, Derek John, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of this year’s NTC conference. He noted that, unlike previous years, many of the concerns raised by Toshaos were either addressed immediately or received updates on their progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to improving the lives and infrastructure of Guyana’s hinterland communities, fostering sustainable development, and responding to the needs and aspirations of its citizens in these regions.
