World Teachers’ Day 2024 is being celebrated under the theme “Recognizing and Appreciating Teachers’ Voices and Working towards a New Social Contract for Education.”
Observed annually on October 5, this day honors the dedication, hard work, and achievements of educators worldwide.
In recognition of this significant occasion, NCN spoke with members of the teaching community to gain insights into their experiences and journeys.
Teacher Kerryann Hall, from Region 7, and Francine Gomes, now serving as an Education Officer in Region Nine, shared their perspectives on the teaching profession.
Kerryann Hall, who has been teaching for six years and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Guyana, expressed her passion for education.
She highlighted the joy she finds in interacting with her students and witnessing their progress in understanding challenging concepts.
Francine Gomes, an educator with over 28 years of experience, discussed her career journey, which was influenced by her family’s background in teaching.
Originally uncertain about her career path after secondary school, she ultimately chose education and began teaching at the age of sixteen.
Gomes, who hails from Rupununi in Region Nine, relishes the successful execution of planned classroom activities, particularly enjoying engaging field trips and science projects with her students.
Both educators emphasized the importance of passion in the teaching profession, encouraging those considering a career in education to be motivated by a genuine desire to shape future generations.
Despite the challenges associated with teaching, they recognize the rewards that come from making a positive impact on students’ lives.
As World Teachers’ Day approaches, it serves as a reminder of the critical role teachers play in fostering learning and growth in their communities.
