World Food Day Exhibition Celebrates Agriculture and Sustainability

The World Food Day exhibition held at the Georgetown Cricket Club on Monday garnered praise from both patrons and exhibitors.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and its stakeholders, was aligned with the theme “Water is Life; Water is Food, Leave no one behind,” in observance of World Food Day 2023.

Exhibitors showcased a diverse range of products, including ground ginger and ginger-thyme seasoning for meats, emphasizing the importance of buying and consuming local produce.

Denise Canterbury, an exhibitor, highlighted the quality and versatility of their offerings.

Patron Johnetta Stewart expressed support for initiatives promoting food security and urged the public to prioritize local consumption.

Hydroponic systems were also a highlight of the exhibition, demonstrating modern farming techniques that reduce manual labor and environmental impact.

Khalil Benjamin, a Research Assistant at the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI), praised the efficiency and ease of setup of these systems.

Additionally, the Ministry distributed various fruit plants to patrons, including orchard plants like cherry, soursop, and sapodilla, as well as citrus fruits like lemon, lime, and oranges.

Leelawattie Persaud, a Research Scientist at NAREI, emphasized the consideration for health in their plant selections.

World Food Day is globally observed on October 16, and the exhibition in Georgetown served as a meaningful platform to highlight the vital role of agriculture and sustainable practices in food production.
