World Cancer Day: Advocating to ‘Close the Care Gap’

Sunday February 4 is World Cancer Day

On Sunday, February 4, World Cancer Day will be observed under the theme “Close the Care Gap.”

This global initiative, led by the International Union for Cancer Control (UICC), aims to raise awareness, improve education, and coordinate efforts to promote access to care and treatment for cancer patients.

In Guyana, the Guyana Cancer Institute and the non-profit Periwinkle Cancer Club organized a cancer awareness activity in support of this cause.

Dr. Syed Ghazi, the Outreach Manager at the Cancer Institute, emphasized the global impact of cancer, describing it as a “global monster” affecting people worldwide.

He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in the fight against this disease, highlighting that the battle against cancer requires a united front on a global scale.

Former Nursing Tutor at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Pamela Schulters, called on health workers to demonstrate empathy towards cancer patients.

She emphasized the significance of treating patients and their families with respect, acknowledging their experiences and perspectives.

According to Schulters, embracing patients and recognizing their humanity is crucial to providing holistic and compassionate care.

Cancer is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality globally, ranking as the second most frequent cause in the Americas after cardiovascular disease.

The theme “Close the care gap” underscores the need to address disparities in access to cancer care, ensuring that individuals, regardless of their circumstances, have equitable opportunities for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and support.

World Cancer Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to combat cancer on multiple fronts, including raising awareness, enhancing education, and fostering collaboration among individuals, communities, and governments.

The global cancer community continues to work towards achieving a world where the care gap is closed, and every person facing cancer receives the support and treatment they deserve.

This year’s World Cancer Day activities contribute to the broader mission of advocating for greater education, reducing health inequalities, and promoting comprehensive cancer care for all.
