The Women’s Army Corps (WAC) of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) celebrated its 58th anniversary on February 3, 2025, with a thanksgiving service held at the Auditorium of Base Camp Ayanganna.
The event highlighted the WAC’s commitment to continuous improvement and adaptability in the face of evolving challenges.
The anniversary was observed under the theme “Transforming Women to Better Confront Present and Future Challenges by Enhancing Awareness, Adaptability, and Agility Capabilities.”
This theme underscores the ongoing efforts to enhance the capabilities of female soldiers within the GDF to meet the demands of modern military service.
Lieutenant Colonel Natasha Stanford-Francis, the Commanding Officer of the WAC, reflected on the progress made by the corps over the years, praising the achievements of female soldiers in various roles, both locally and abroad.
She emphasized the importance of continued education and engagement in all areas of the force, particularly in roles traditionally occupied by men.
Brigadier Omar Khan, Chief of Staff of the GDF, also addressed the audience, acknowledging the transformation of the WAC from a small unit into a prominent force within the GDF.
He noted the increasing number of women in senior positions and highlighted the importance of providing opportunities for female officers to take command, not only of women but of male soldiers as well.
The GDF aims to continue fostering a vibrant and capable corps of women capable of operating in any environment.
The 58th anniversary celebration marks another milestone in the WAC’s history, with the future offering even greater opportunities for the women of the Guyana Defence Force to break new barriers and achieve higher standards of excellence.
